The cake was carved and pieced together from one 9" x 13" rectangle chocolate cake. We used pretzel rods dipped in chocolate for the cannons. This photo was taken before the pretzels were dipped in chocolate.
We rolled out taffy candy pieces with a rolling pin and cut out the letters and numbers for the side of the ship. We decorated it with various other candies and frosting.
(Hint: If your taffy candy is stiff, you can try microwaving it for a few seconds to soften it up. Be sure you do not heat the taffy for too long, or you will have a gooey mess.)
It was a hit! Colby loved his battleship cake!
Making 3D Birthday cakes can be a lot of work, but we have fun making them and my kids love their customized cakes. They also like to help decorate them!
